Twenty years of zebra mussels: lessons from the mollusk that made headlines

چکیده
© The Ecological Society of America www.frontiersinecology.org S zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) first appeared in North America in 1988 (Hebert et al. 1989; see Carlton [in press] for a precise chronology), the mollusk has become the iconic alien species. The appearance of zebra mussels, together with many other invaders, highlighted the absence of effective controls on alien species in North America, and helped to usher in an era of heightened awareness about alien species. Now that we have had two decades to observe zebra mussels in North America, this seems a good time to reflect on what we have learned from the invasion and how this illuminates advances and limitations in scientific understanding, management, and policy about alien species in general. Here, I will consider four important questions that were raised at the outset of the invasion (Roberts 1990): (1) How far would the species spread in North America? (2) What ecological and economic impacts would result? (3) Might this high-profile invader raise public concern about alien species? (4) Would we develop effective controls and policies to manage this and other alien species? Range and spread

Zebra Mussel ( Dreissena polymorpha ) Population Distribution In the Mohawk River System : A pilot Study
Dreissena polymorpha, the zebra mussel, a pestiferous mollusk from Eurasia, has spread throughout the navigable waters of the Northeastern United States since its introduction into the Great Lakes system in 1986 (Maxwell, 1992). The appearance of these organisms in the Mohawk River system was first reported in 1991 (O'Neill, 1991). By the summer of 1994 zebra mussels had successfully colonized ...

Background and purpose: In the current study we aimed to investigate the lysosomal membrane stability in haemocytes of the invasive mollusk zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha Pallas, 1771) by applying the neutral red retention assay (NRRA), as well as changes in the respiration rate and survival under acute heavy metal exposure. Materials and methods: The mussels were treated with different dec...
متن کاملEconomic impacts of zebra mussels on drinking water treatment and electric power generation facilities.
Invasions of nonnative species such as zebra mussels can have both ecological and economic consequences. The economic impacts of zebra mussels have not been examined in detail since the mid-1990s. The purpose of this study was to quantify the annual and cumulative economic impact of zebra mussels on surface water-dependent drinking water treatment and electric power generation facilities (where...
متن کاملExotic species replacement: shifting dominance of dreissenid mussels in the Soulanges Canal, upper St. Lawrence River, Canada
During the early 1990s, 2 Eurasian macrofouling mollusks, the zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha and the quagga mussel D. bugensis, colonized the freshwater section of the St. Lawrence River and decimated native mussel populations through competitive interference. For several years, zebra mussels dominated molluscan biomass in the river; however, quagga mussels have increased in abundance and ar...
متن کاملEndosymbionts of Dreissena Polymorpha in Ireland: Evidence for the Introduction of Adult Mussels
Although zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) have invaded waters across Europe for over 200 years, they colonized Ireland only within the past decade. To test the hypothesis that Ireland was colonized by adultD. polymorpha, we examined mussels from different sites along the Lower Shannon River system in Ireland for the presence of host specific and generalist endosymbionts.Within the mantle ca...
